When VW introduced the B5 Passat to North America in 1997, it was the first time since the B2 that the platform was shared with Audi’s A4 and represented a return to form with the Passat planted firmly in the upmarket segment. A hearty 1.8T found in several of the manufacturer’s iconic cars powered some of the FWD and AWD models, but the real joy is the classy, reserved, and sleek design that made the B5 Passat look futuristic and refined. Inside the car was no different, as owners were given a more luxurious cabin than the rest of VW’s lineup at the time. While these cars are aging now, they are still wonderful commuters and a real treat when you encounter one in the wild. If you have one, keep it on the road or personalized to your taste with a little help from your friends at ECS Tuning.
