Many engines require regular valve adjustments to make sure the valvetrain is operating within specification.
This is especially true for high-performance engines, such as the S54 inline-six from the BMW Z3M.
Over time, the valves seats wear down, creating a gap that keeps the valves from opening as they should. This results in insufficient air entering the cylinders, or not enough exhaust leaving them. The gap tolerance issue can also cause an annoying ticking sound from your engine.
