To meet these standards, manufacturers use a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) a non-toxic solution that transforms harmful Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions from Diesel-powered vehicles into harmless water vapor and nitrogen. This fluid is needed to allow the engine to start, if the reservoir becomes low or empty the vehicle will give you a warning code.
