The Mercedes-Benz M271 Evo 1.8L turbocharged inline-4 engine, found in the 2012-2015 C250 and SLK250, relies on a highly responsive Drive-by-Wire electronic throttle body to deliver its punchy performance. Unlike older mechanical cable systems, this advanced Bosch unit takes digital inputs from your accelerator pedal and utilizes a precise internal electric motor to instantly adjust the throttle plate. This feeds the exact volume of boosted air required into the direct-injected combustion chambers.
However, because this engine utilizes direct injection and forced induction, the throttle body is constantly exposed to oily blow-by vapor from the PCV system. Over tens of thousands of miles, this vapor bakes into a sticky, black carbon sludge that coats the throttle flap and the bore. This buildup restricts airflow at idle and forces the internal electric actuator motor to work significantly harder, eventually causing the internal plastic gears to strip or the sensitive Throttle Position Sensors (TPS) to burn out and lose calibration.
Common Signs of a Failing M271 Evo Throttle Body:
Limp Mode & Power Loss: If the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects any discrepancy between your gas pedal position and the actual angle of the throttle plate, it will instantly restrict turbo boost and drop the car into a low-power "limp mode" for safety.
Check Engine Light & OBD-II Codes: A failing unit will trigger a Check Engine Light, almost always accompanied by Throttle Actuator Control System codes (such as P0120, P2135, or P0221).
Rough Idle & Stalling: Carbon buildup around the edges of the throttle flap prevents it from passing the tiny amount of air needed to maintain a smooth idle, resulting in a bouncing tachometer or sudden stalling at stoplights.
Hesitation & Poor Acceleration: A worn electric actuator motor will cause a noticeable, dangerous delay between pressing the accelerator and the engine actually revving up.
ECS Tuning Recommends for C250 & SLK250 Owners: Do not simply bolt your new throttle body onto a filthy intake manifold! You must thoroughly clean the mating surface and the entrance to the intake, otherwise, your brand-new throttle flap will immediately bind up in the old carbon sludge.
Tech Tip: You must replace the rubber throttle body gasket (O-ring) during this service. Reusing the old, flattened gasket on a turbocharged engine is guaranteed to result in a massive vacuum and boost leak, triggering a whole new set of Check Engine Light codes!
Essential Tools & Hardware for the Job
Replacing the throttle body on your 1.8L turbo is an excellent DIY that restores that "like-new" pedal feel, but dealing with the oily carbon buildup and factory hardware requires the right supplies. We highly recommend adding these items to your ECS Tuning cart before starting the repair:
CRC Throttle Body & Air-Intake Cleaner (ECS Part #: ES#261704): Unlike aggressive brake cleaners that can melt sensitive plastics and strip protective coatings, this specific solvent is formulated to safely melt away sticky carbon sludge from the intake tract without damaging your engine.
Schwaben 11-Piece External Torx (E-Torx) Socket Set (ECS Part #: ES#2777804): Mercedes-Benz uses E-Torx hardware to bolt the throttle body to the intake manifold. You cannot use standard hex sockets on these without stripping the heads and turning a simple 30-minute job into a weekend nightmare.
Genuine Mercedes-Benz Throttle Body Gasket: Remember to add the specific green rubber O-ring gasket for the M271 Evo engine to your cart to ensure a perfect, boost-proof seal.

New/Unused Product Returns
ECS Tuning will accept returns for unused products within 90 days of the ship date for a refund to the original payment method used. The customer is responsible for the return shipping costs and fees. If selecting to use a prepaid shipping label, the shipping cost will be deducted from the total refunded amount. All new/unused products must be new, unused and must be in the original packaging, including labeling, manuals, hardware, etc. Special order parts are non-refundable.
In the event that we find an error on our website or on behalf of an ECS Tuning Representative, we will provide a return shipping label from the original delivery location.
Refused Packages
Any domestic orders that are returned to ECS Tuning as refused by receiver or non-deliverable will be subject to a return handling fee and will be processed as a return in compliance with our standard return policy, including a 15% restocking fee.
Any international orders that are refused at the time of delivery will be subject to carrier abandonment of the package, at which time the ordered products would be discarded by the carrier. The customer will not be refunded for the value of the order and the discarded products are no longer retrievable.

Please note: Refunds will be processed to the original payment method used on the order or to an in store credit, respective to the type of return that is made as well as any pre-existing arrangements with an ECS Tuning Customer Service Representative. In the event that multiple forms of payment were used, we will refund the value to an in store credit. In the event that a return label is provided, these charges may be deducted from the total refund you receive.
Original shipping costs are non-refundable and the buyer is responsible for return shipping charges. ECS Tuning will not accept COD deliveries.
All in store credit balances will expire after one year from the original purchase date.
