The 2005-2006 Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI, powered by the legendary OM648 3.2L inline-6 diesel engine, is highly sought after by enthusiasts for its bulletproof reliability and incredible highway fuel economy. To achieve this perfect balance of low-end torque and efficiency, your Engine Control Module (ECM) relies entirely on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor—often referred to as the Hot-Film Air Mass Meter.
Mounted directly in the intake tract, this highly sensitive Bosch component continuously measures the exact volume and density of the air entering the turbocharger. The ECM uses this critical data to calculate the precise amount of high-pressure diesel fuel to inject and to correctly regulate the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. However, over tens of thousands of miles, the delicate heated film element inside the sensor becomes coated with microscopic dust particles, pollen, and oily blow-by from the PCV system. When this element becomes insulated by dirt or burns out entirely, it sends skewed data to the computer, instantly throwing off the engine's air-fuel mixture.
Common Signs of a Failing OM648 Mass Air Flow Sensor:
Check Engine Light & OBD-II Codes: A failing MAF will quickly trigger a Check Engine Light, typically accompanied by P0101 (Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit Range/Performance) or codes indicating the short-term fuel trim is excessively rich or lean.
Limp Mode & Sluggish Acceleration: If the ECM receives irrational data from the MAF, it will restrict turbo boost and put the engine into a low-power "limp mode" to protect itself from damage. You will notice a severe lack of power when trying to merge onto the highway.
Rough Idle & Surging: You may experience an erratic, bouncing idle, or a sudden loss of power when pulling away from a stoplight.
Heavy Black Smoke: An incorrect air-reading causes the engine to run excessively "rich," dumping unburnt diesel fuel into the exhaust system in the form of thick black soot.
ECS Tuning Recommends for CDI Owners: Do not install a brand-new MAF sensor without replacing your engine air filter! The most common cause of premature MAF failure is a dirty, clogged, or poorly fitting air filter that allows debris to sandblast the delicate hot-film element.
Tech Tip: The sensitive measuring element inside this Bosch sensor is exposed. Never touch the internal wire/film with your fingers, as the natural oils from your skin will bake onto the element and destroy it the moment the engine is started. Ensure the entire airbox housing is wiped completely clean before installing the new sensor.
Essential Tools & Hardware for the Job
Replacing the MAF sensor on your E320 CDI is a very accessible DIY, but it requires extreme cleanliness and the correct bits to remove the factory hardware. We highly recommend adding these items to your ECS Tuning cart before starting the repair:
Mann-Filter Engine Air Filter (ECS Part #: ES#2570081): (CRITICAL) You must replace your engine air filter simultaneously to ensure clean, unrestricted airflow to your brand-new MAF sensor.
Schwaben 100-Piece Specialty Bit Kit (ECS Part #: ES#2500878): Mercedes-Benz and Bosch often use specialized security Torx (star bits with a center pin) or 5-lobe security fasteners to secure the MAF sensor insert to the intake housing. Standard Torx bits will not fit, but this comprehensive kit includes the exact tamper-proof bits needed for European vehicles.
CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner (ECS Part #: ES#3035760): While your new sensor is perfectly clean, this is a great chemical to keep on the shelf for future 20,000-mile maintenance intervals to safely strip away oil and dust without damaging the sensitive plastics.

New/Unused Product Returns
ECS Tuning will accept returns for unused products within 90 days of the ship date for a refund to the original payment method used. The customer is responsible for the return shipping costs and fees. If selecting to use a prepaid shipping label, the shipping cost will be deducted from the total refunded amount. All new/unused products must be new, unused and must be in the original packaging, including labeling, manuals, hardware, etc. Special order parts are non-refundable.
In the event that we find an error on our website or on behalf of an ECS Tuning Representative, we will provide a return shipping label from the original delivery location.
Refused Packages
Any domestic orders that are returned to ECS Tuning as refused by receiver or non-deliverable will be subject to a return handling fee and will be processed as a return in compliance with our standard return policy, including a 15% restocking fee.
Any international orders that are refused at the time of delivery will be subject to carrier abandonment of the package, at which time the ordered products would be discarded by the carrier. The customer will not be refunded for the value of the order and the discarded products are no longer retrievable.

Please note: Refunds will be processed to the original payment method used on the order or to an in store credit, respective to the type of return that is made as well as any pre-existing arrangements with an ECS Tuning Customer Service Representative. In the event that multiple forms of payment were used, we will refund the value to an in store credit. In the event that a return label is provided, these charges may be deducted from the total refund you receive.
Original shipping costs are non-refundable and the buyer is responsible for return shipping charges. ECS Tuning will not accept COD deliveries.
All in store credit balances will expire after one year from the original purchase date.
