The Mercedes-Benz OM651 2.1L inline-4 diesel engine is a marvel of modern efficiency, providing excellent torque for everything from the heavy-duty Sprinter vans to the GLK250 and E250 BlueTEC. However, unlike a gasoline engine where the throttle body controls engine RPM, the throttle body on your OM651 diesel serves a different set of critical purposes.
First, it acts as an anti-shudder valve. When you turn the key off, the throttle plate slams completely shut, starving the engine of air so it shuts down instantly and smoothly without violent vibrations. Second, it restricts fresh air intake to create a vacuum, drawing burnt exhaust gases through the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve to lower combustion temperatures and NOx emissions. Unfortunately, the mixture of dry EGR soot and oily vapor from the PCV system creates a thick, sticky carbon sludge. Over time, this sludge jams the throttle flap, causing the internal plastic gears to strip or the delicate electric actuator to burn out.
Common Signs of a Failing OM651 Throttle Body:
Violent Engine Shutdown: The most obvious physical symptom of a stripped or failed diesel throttle body is a harsh, vibrating shudder that shakes the vehicle when you turn the ignition off.
Check Engine Light & Limp Mode: The Engine Control Module (ECM) closely monitors the throttle flap angle. If it jams or lags, you will instantly trigger a Check Engine Light and the vehicle will likely drop into a low-power Limp Mode.
Rough Idle & Hesitation: If the flap is stuck partially closed, the engine is starved of fresh air, resulting in a stumbling idle, poor acceleration, and heavy exhaust smoke.
Frequent DPF Clogging: A malfunctioning throttle body throws off the EGR flow and combustion efficiency, drastically increasing soot output which rapidly clogs your expensive Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
ECS Tuning Recommends for OM651 Owners: When you remove your old throttle body, you are going to find a massive amount of thick, black carbon sludge packed inside the intake manifold. Do not just bolt the new part on! You must carefully clean the mating surface and the entrance to the intake, or the new throttle flap will immediately bind up in the old sludge.
Tech Tip: The Sprinter fitment notes mention this is "Not for cars with Code 929K". Always verify your vehicle's build data card before ordering emissions and intake components to ensure proper fitment for your exact configuration.

Schwaben 11-Piece External Torx (E-Torx) Socket Set (ECS Part #: ES#2777804): Mercedes-Benz uses E-Torx hardware extensively on the OM651 engine. You cannot use standard hex sockets on these without stripping the heads and turning a simple job into a nightmare.
Schwaben 4-Piece Pick and Hook Set (ECS Part #: ES#3098555): Essential for carefully digging out old, flattened O-ring seals from the charge pipes and intake tract without scoring the delicate plastic sealing surfaces.

New/Unused Product Returns
ECS Tuning will accept returns for unused products within 90 days of the ship date for a refund to the original payment method used. The customer is responsible for the return shipping costs and fees. If selecting to use a prepaid shipping label, the shipping cost will be deducted from the total refunded amount. All new/unused products must be new, unused and must be in the original packaging, including labeling, manuals, hardware, etc. Special order parts are non-refundable.
In the event that we find an error on our website or on behalf of an ECS Tuning Representative, we will provide a return shipping label from the original delivery location.
Refused Packages
Any domestic orders that are returned to ECS Tuning as refused by receiver or non-deliverable will be subject to a return handling fee and will be processed as a return in compliance with our standard return policy, including a 15% restocking fee.
Any international orders that are refused at the time of delivery will be subject to carrier abandonment of the package, at which time the ordered products would be discarded by the carrier. The customer will not be refunded for the value of the order and the discarded products are no longer retrievable.

Please note: Refunds will be processed to the original payment method used on the order or to an in store credit, respective to the type of return that is made as well as any pre-existing arrangements with an ECS Tuning Customer Service Representative. In the event that multiple forms of payment were used, we will refund the value to an in store credit. In the event that a return label is provided, these charges may be deducted from the total refund you receive.
Original shipping costs are non-refundable and the buyer is responsible for return shipping charges. ECS Tuning will not accept COD deliveries.
All in store credit balances will expire after one year from the original purchase date.
