Automotive oxygen sensors make modern electronic fuel injection and emission control possible. They help determine if the air fuel ratio of a combustion engine is rich or lean. Since oxygen sensors are located in the exhaust stream, they do not directly measure the air or the fuel entering the engine.
If your oxygen sensor is damaged or isn’t working anymore, you will likely notice via warning lights on the dash. Running your car with a defective, disconnected or missing sensor puts the computer into open loop, which does not allow the computer to modify the amount of fuel added.
