The Mercedes-Benz OM642 3.0L V6 diesel is a legendary powerplant, providing massive torque to everything from the heavy-duty Sprinter 3500XD to the luxurious S350 BlueTEC. However, unlike a gasoline engine where the throttle body controls engine speed, the throttle body on your diesel OM642 serves two very different, but equally critical, purposes.
First, it regulates the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system by partially closing to create a vacuum, drawing burnt exhaust gases back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures and emissions. Second, it acts as an anti-shudder valve. When you turn your key off, the throttle plate slams completely shut, choking the engine of air so it shuts down instantly and smoothly. Unfortunately, the mixture of dry soot from the EGR and oily vapor from the PCV system creates a thick, sticky carbon sludge inside the intake. Over time, this sludge jams the throttle flap, causing the internal plastic gears to strip or the electric actuator motor to completely burn out.
Common Signs of a Failing OM642 Throttle Body:
Violent Engine Shutdown: The most obvious physical symptom of a stripped or failed diesel throttle body is a harsh, vibrating shudder that shakes the whole vehicle when you turn the engine off.
Check Engine Light & Limp Mode: The Engine Control Module (ECM) closely monitors the throttle flap angle. If it jams, you will get a Check Engine Light (often with codes like P02E1 for Diesel Intake Air Flow Control) and the vehicle will likely drop into a low-power Limp Mode.
Rough Idle & Hesitation: If the flap is stuck partially closed, the engine is being starved of fresh air, resulting in a stumbling idle, poor acceleration, and heavy black exhaust smoke.
Frequent DPF Clogging: A malfunctioning throttle body throws off the EGR flow, drastically increasing soot output which rapidly clogs your expensive Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
ECS Tuning Recommends for OM642 Owners: When you remove your old throttle body, you are going to find a massive amount of thick, black carbon sludge packed behind it. Do not just bolt the new part on! You must carefully clean the mating surface and the entrance to the intake manifold, or the new throttle flap will immediately bind up in the old sludge.
Tech Tip: The large, green rubber O-ring seal on the plastic charge pipe connecting to the throttle body is notorious for leaking boost after it has been disturbed. We highly recommend replacing this charge pipe seal while you have it apart to prevent future boost leak codes.
Essential Tools & Hardware for the Job
Replacing the throttle body on your 3.0L V6 diesel is a rewarding DIY, but getting through the carbon buildup and factory hardware requires the right supplies. We highly recommend adding these items to your ECS Tuning cart before starting the repair:
Liqui Moly Pro-Line Diesel Intake System Cleaner (ECS Part #: ES#2770281): This high-tech chemical solvent is specifically formulated to melt away the rock-hard diesel soot and oily sludge that jams up your throttle body and intake manifold.
Schwaben 11-Piece External Torx (E-Torx) Socket Set (ECS Part #: ES#2777804): The throttle body is bolted to the intake manifold using E-Torx hardware. You cannot use standard hex sockets on these without stripping the heads and turning a simple job into a nightmare.
Schwaben 4-Piece Pick and Hook Set (ECS Part #: ES#3098555): Essential for carefully digging out the old, flattened O-ring seals from the plastic charge pipes without scoring the sealing surfaces.

New/Unused Product Returns
ECS Tuning will accept returns for unused products within 90 days of the ship date for a refund to the original payment method used. The customer is responsible for the return shipping costs and fees. If selecting to use a prepaid shipping label, the shipping cost will be deducted from the total refunded amount. All new/unused products must be new, unused and must be in the original packaging, including labeling, manuals, hardware, etc. Special order parts are non-refundable.
In the event that we find an error on our website or on behalf of an ECS Tuning Representative, we will provide a return shipping label from the original delivery location.
Refused Packages
Any domestic orders that are returned to ECS Tuning as refused by receiver or non-deliverable will be subject to a return handling fee and will be processed as a return in compliance with our standard return policy, including a 15% restocking fee.
Any international orders that are refused at the time of delivery will be subject to carrier abandonment of the package, at which time the ordered products would be discarded by the carrier. The customer will not be refunded for the value of the order and the discarded products are no longer retrievable.

Please note: Refunds will be processed to the original payment method used on the order or to an in store credit, respective to the type of return that is made as well as any pre-existing arrangements with an ECS Tuning Customer Service Representative. In the event that multiple forms of payment were used, we will refund the value to an in store credit. In the event that a return label is provided, these charges may be deducted from the total refund you receive.
Original shipping costs are non-refundable and the buyer is responsible for return shipping charges. ECS Tuning will not accept COD deliveries.
All in store credit balances will expire after one year from the original purchase date.
