Let’s face it, upgrades for E53 differentials are limited. If you're serious about off-roading your X5 or tackling deep snow, your options are typically expensive and complex setups like hydraulic or electric lockers, or limited-slip differentials (LSDs). This ratcheting-style locker offers a cost-effective, DIY alternative that’s as functional as it is fun to assemble. By replacing the factory spider gears within the OE carrier, this system gives you an OEM+ upgrade that’s built to perform.
Made from heat-treated 4130 steel, this locker provides brute-force dependability and rugged power delivery to both rear wheels. It offers proven off-road performance while maintaining good street manners, thanks to its automatic ratcheting action. Unlike LSDs, which allow some slipping, this locker fully locks both wheels when needed, similar to pneumatic or electric lockers but without requiring external controls. Instead, it uses spring pins to automatically engage and disengage, enabling seamless on-road and off-road transitions.
How a lunchbox locker works:
This is a mechanical locker featuring square-cut side gears. When the differential is not under load the gears can separate to allowing them to rotate past each other in a mostly unlocked position offering regular operation. When the diff is put under load from on-throttle conditions the gears then are pressed together to lock both wheels for 100% engagement.
One thing to note: as a ratcheting locker, you may hear some noise during operation. This is entirely normal and simply part of the locker doing its job. For example, when switching from a left to a right turn in a parking lot, the gears settle into their next locked position. During left turns, the differential allows the inside and outside tires to move at different speeds while locking up when a wheel loses traction. After transitioning to a right-hand turn, the locker disengages and re-engages in the opposite direction to let the wheels function independently. When one wheel is rotating faster than the other you may or may not hear a ratcheting affect based on your hearing sensitivity or sound levels.

All you need is your order number and email address.
New/Unused Product Returns
ECS Tuning will accept returns for unused products within 90 days of the ship date for a refund to the original payment method used. The customer is responsible for the return shipping costs and fees. If selecting to use a prepaid shipping label, the shipping cost will be deducted from the total refunded amount. All new/unused products must be new, unused and must be in the original packaging, including labeling, manuals, hardware, etc. Special order parts are non-refundable.
In the event that we find an error on our website or on behalf of an ECS Tuning Representative, we will provide a return shipping label from the original delivery location.
Refused Packages
Any domestic orders that are returned to ECS Tuning as refused by receiver or non-deliverable will be subject to a return handling fee and will be processed as a return in compliance with our standard return policy, including a 15% restocking fee.
Any international orders that are refused at the time of delivery will be subject to carrier abandonment of the package, at which time the ordered products would be discarded by the carrier. The customer will not be refunded for the value of the order and the discarded products are no longer retrievable.

Please note: Refunds will be processed to the original payment method used on the order or to an in store credit, respective to the type of return that is made as well as any pre-existing arrangements with an ECS Tuning Customer Service Representative. In the event that multiple forms of payment were used, we will refund the value to an in store credit. In the event that a return label is provided, these charges may be deducted from the total refund you receive.
Original shipping costs are non-refundable and the buyer is responsible for return shipping charges. ECS Tuning will not accept COD deliveries.
All in store credit balances will expire after one year from the original purchase date.
