Product Details
The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (X253) offers incredible utility, but that heavy rear hatch can become a serious burden when the lift supports start to fail. Designed for GLC models equipped with a standard manual tailgate (without the Code 890 Automatic Power Hatch), these pressurized gas struts act as the muscles that help you easily lift the tailgate and keep it safely locked in the open position.
Over years of opening and closing, the internal seals on these gas struts dry out and slowly leak their pressurized nitrogen charge. This process is drastically accelerated by extreme temperature fluctuations. When these supports lose their pressure, the heavy tailgate becomes incredibly difficult to open, transforming a simple trip to the grocery store into a frustrating workout.
Common Signs of Failing Liftgate Supports:
Sagging or Dropping Hatch: The tailgate no longer opens to its full height, or worse, it slowly sags down and hits you on the head while you are loading cargo.
Cold Weather Failure: The struts may seem fine during the summer, but completely fail to hold the hatch up on the first freezing morning of winter (cold causes the internal gas to contract, exposing a weak strut).
Extremely Heavy to Lift: Without the gas pressure assisting you, you are lifting the dead weight of the tailgate entirely on your own.
Visible Fluid Leaks: A streak of oily residue running down the silver shaft of the shock is a guaranteed sign that the internal hydraulic seal has blown.
ECS Tuning Recommends for GLC Owners:
Always replace lift supports in pairs! If one strut has failed, the other is right behind it. Replacing only one strut creates an unbalanced load that will quickly blow out the new strut and can twist the tailgate hinges.
Tech Tip: SAFETY FIRST! The GLC tailgate is incredibly heavy without these gas struts. Do not attempt to use your head or shoulder to hold the hatch up. Have a strong assistant hold the door fully open, or use a dedicated mechanical prop rod. When removing the old strut, you only need to slide a small flathead screwdriver or pick under the metal C-clip on the ball joint to pry it back slightly—do not remove the clip entirely! To install the new strut, simply push the socket onto the ball stud until it snaps securely into place.
Essential Tools & Hardware for the Job
Replacing your liftgate supports is an incredibly fast and rewarding DIY that usually takes less than 10 minutes, but you need to secure the heavy hatch and safely release the retaining clips. We highly recommend adding these items to your ECS Tuning cart:
Schwaben Hood/Trunk Prop (ECS Part #: ES#2804771): If you don't have an assistant to hold the heavy hatch, this adjustable steel prop rod will safely lock the tailgate in the fully open position while you pop the old struts off.
Schwaben 4-Piece Pick and Hook Set (ECS Part #: ES#3098555): A small 90-degree pick or flat blade is the absolute best tool to gently pry the metal retaining clips back without slipping and scratching your vehicle's paint.
Liqui Moly White Lithium Grease (ECS Part #: ES#2616215): Before snapping your brand-new Genuine struts onto the vehicle, apply a tiny dab of this long-lasting lithium grease inside the socket. This ensures smooth, silent operation and prevents the metal ball stud from rusting.

All you need is your order number and email address.
New/Unused Product Returns
ECS Tuning will accept returns for unused products within 90 days of the ship date for a refund to the original payment method used. The customer is responsible for the return shipping costs and fees. If selecting to use a prepaid shipping label, the shipping cost will be deducted from the total refunded amount. All new/unused products must be new, unused and must be in the original packaging, including labeling, manuals, hardware, etc. Special order parts are non-refundable.
In the event that we find an error on our website or on behalf of an ECS Tuning Representative, we will provide a return shipping label from the original delivery location.
Refused Packages
Any domestic orders that are returned to ECS Tuning as refused by receiver or non-deliverable will be subject to a return handling fee and will be processed as a return in compliance with our standard return policy, including a 15% restocking fee.
Any international orders that are refused at the time of delivery will be subject to carrier abandonment of the package, at which time the ordered products would be discarded by the carrier. The customer will not be refunded for the value of the order and the discarded products are no longer retrievable.

To get started, simply log into your ECS Tuning account, Click the "View Orders" button on the My Account home page and select the order that you wish to make a return on to begin. Please note: Refunds will be processed to the original payment method used on the order or to an in store credit, respective to the type of return that is made as well as any pre-existing arrangements with an ECS Tuning Customer Service Representative. In the event that multiple forms of payment were used, we will refund the value to an in store credit. In the event that a return label is provided, these charges may be deducted from the total refund you receive.
Original shipping costs are non-refundable and the buyer is responsible for return shipping charges. ECS Tuning will not accept COD deliveries.
All in store credit balances will expire after one year from the original purchase date.
