The legendary early-90s Mercedes-Benz engines—such as the thunderous M119 V8 found in the Porsche-built 500E and W124 400E, or the buttery-smooth M104 inline-6 powering the C280 and C36 AMG—rely on absolute precision to deliver their iconic performance. To achieve this, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) dictates fuel injection and ignition timing based almost entirely on data from the Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS).
Mounted deep on the engine block near the flywheel or transmission bellhousing, this critical magnetic sensor reads the notches on a spinning reluctor wheel to determine the exact rotational speed and position of the crankshaft. Over decades of extreme under-hood temperatures and relentless engine vibration, the internal magnetic coil inside the sensor can break down or short out, causing it to send erratic or missing signals to the computer. Without this data, the ECU has no idea when to fire the spark plugs or pulse the injectors, bringing your classic Mercedes to a dead stop.
Common Signs of a Failing Crankshaft Position Sensor:
Stalling When Warm: A failing CPS on these classic engines often suffers from "thermal shock." The sensor may work perfectly when the engine is cold, but internally short-circuit as the block reaches operating temperature, causing the vehicle to suddenly stall in traffic.
No Start Condition: If the ECU does not receive a clear RPM signal from the sensor during cranking, it will not command fuel or spark, resulting in an engine that cranks endlessly but refuses to fire.
Dead or Erratic Tachometer: On many early-90s Mercedes-Benz models, the tachometer needle relies directly on the RPM output from the crankshaft sensor. A dead tachometer during a crank-no-start condition is a massive clue that the CPS has failed.
Random Misfires & Hesitation: Because the CPS governs the timing for the entire engine, erratic signals can cause sudden, violent misfires across multiple cylinders simultaneously, or severe hesitation under acceleration.
ECS Tuning Recommends for Classic Mercedes Owners: A failing crankshaft position sensor is one of the most common causes of a W124 or W202 leaving you stranded on the side of the road. If your Mercedes suddenly stalls when hot but miraculously restarts perfectly after sitting with the hood open for 45 minutes, the CPS is almost certainly the culprit.
Tech Tip: The CPS is magnetically highly sensitive. When removing the old sensor, ensure the mounting hole on the engine block is completely free of dirt, oil sludge, and corrosion. Any debris trapped between the new sensor tip and the flywheel will interfere with the magnetic field and cause an immediate running issue.

Replacing the crankshaft position sensor is an essential DIY that can save you a massive towing bill. However, because the sensor is notoriously buried deep near the firewall on both the V8 and inline-6 engines, having the right tools is the difference between a 30-minute repair and a weekend of frustration. Schwaben Locking Flex-Head Ratchet & Extension Set (ECS Part #: ES#3184421): The CPS is located down behind the cylinder heads, making it nearly impossible to reach with a standard ratchet. A long, flexible extension and a flex-head ratchet are absolutely mandatory to reach the mounting bolt without removing major components.
Schwaben 100-Piece Specialty Bit Kit (ECS Part #: ES#2500878): Mercedes-Benz relies on specific Hex (Allen) or Torx fasteners to secure the CPS to the engine block depending on the exact year. This comprehensive kit ensures you have the exact bit needed to extract it without stripping the bolt head in a tight space.
CRC QD Electronic Cleaner (ECS Part #: ES#2804752): Thirty years of oil leaks and road grime can contaminate the CPS wiring harness. Spray out the vehicle-side connector thoroughly before plugging in your new sensor to ensure a perfect micro-voltage connection.

New/Unused Product Returns
ECS Tuning will accept returns for unused products within 90 days of the ship date for a refund to the original payment method used. The customer is responsible for the return shipping costs and fees. If selecting to use a prepaid shipping label, the shipping cost will be deducted from the total refunded amount. All new/unused products must be new, unused and must be in the original packaging, including labeling, manuals, hardware, etc. Special order parts are non-refundable.
In the event that we find an error on our website or on behalf of an ECS Tuning Representative, we will provide a return shipping label from the original delivery location.
Refused Packages
Any domestic orders that are returned to ECS Tuning as refused by receiver or non-deliverable will be subject to a return handling fee and will be processed as a return in compliance with our standard return policy, including a 15% restocking fee.
Any international orders that are refused at the time of delivery will be subject to carrier abandonment of the package, at which time the ordered products would be discarded by the carrier. The customer will not be refunded for the value of the order and the discarded products are no longer retrievable.

Please note: Refunds will be processed to the original payment method used on the order or to an in store credit, respective to the type of return that is made as well as any pre-existing arrangements with an ECS Tuning Customer Service Representative. In the event that multiple forms of payment were used, we will refund the value to an in store credit. In the event that a return label is provided, these charges may be deducted from the total refund you receive.
Original shipping costs are non-refundable and the buyer is responsible for return shipping charges. ECS Tuning will not accept COD deliveries.
All in store credit balances will expire after one year from the original purchase date.
