One of the most well-documented modes of failure for the M96 Boxster & Carrera engines is intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failure. The seal in the factory bearing fails, causing engine oil to wash the original grease out of the bearing. This increased friction causes the bearing to overheat and self-destruct.
This retrofit kit includes LN Engineering's exclusive cryogenically-treated ceramic hybrid ball bearing. This bearing has a higher load rating than the OEM bearing, and is designed to be lubricated by engine oil, so it will not overheat like the original bearing. Also includes custom shaft cover flange with seal and bolts, and an upgraded center bolt. Special tools are required for installation without disassembling the engine. This is an ideal preventative maintenance item to be done during a clutch replacement. Vehicles with model year 2000-2001 will need to determine if their original bearing is single-row or double-row. This replacement is for the double-row bearing, which can be identified by the shallow IMS flange (13.34mm depth).
Recommended service interval for this bearing retrofit is 6 years or 75,000 miles.
