On the B7 S4, a check valve stuck in the open position will drain hydraulic lifters and chain tensioners of oil when the engine is turned off, forcing the car to start with incorrect tolerances in the cylinder head. A rattling sound heard during start up is a typical sign of check valve failure. ECS assembled Oil Check Valve Service Kits include both replacement OEM VW/Audi check valves, a valley pan gasket, oil filter adapter gasket, oil spray valve, and both intake manifold gaskets for a thorough cylinder head servicing.

The problem is widespread and chronic: cam followers for the high pressure fuel pump in FSI engines are prone to wear. Savvy FSI owners periodically pull the pump and check the follower to avoid costly fuel pump and camshaft damage. The factory oil filter housing cap on your Audi doesn't jive with the rest of the engine bay's fine materials.
