Product Details
The legendary Mercedes-Benz M119 4.2L and 5.0L V8 engines found in the late-90s W140 S-Class, R129 SL500, and W210 E420 are celebrated for their buttery-smooth power delivery and bulletproof reliability. To achieve this refined performance, the ME engine management system relies entirely on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor—often referred to as the Hot-Film Air Mass Meter.
Mounted directly in the intake tract, this highly sensitive component continuously measures the exact volume, temperature, and density of the air entering your V8 engine. The engine computer uses this critical data to calculate the precise amount of fuel to inject and to manage transmission shift points. However, over decades of driving, the delicate heated film element inside the sensor becomes coated with microscopic dust particles and oily blow-by from the PCV system. When this element becomes insulated by dirt or burns out entirely, it sends skewed data to the computer, instantly throwing off the air-fuel mixture and causing a cascade of drivability issues.
Common Signs of a Failing M119 Mass Air Flow Sensor:
ASR/ESP Warning Lights: On late-90s Mercedes, a failing MAF often triggers the ASR (Acceleration Slip Regulation) or ESP light. The traction control system relies on engine load data from the MAF; when the data is erratic, the system disables itself and triggers a warning.
Check Engine Light & OBD-II Codes: A failing MAF will quickly trigger a Check Engine Light, typically accompanied by P0101 (Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit Range/Performance) or codes indicating the short-term fuel trim is excessively rich or lean.
Rough Idle & Stalling: You may experience an erratic, bouncing idle, a severe stumble when pressing the gas pedal, or sudden stalling when coming to a stoplight.
Limp Mode & Harsh Shifting: If the computer receives irrational data from the MAF, it will drop the vehicle into a low-power "limp mode" and cause the automatic transmission to shift very harshly due to incorrect engine load calculations.
ECS Tuning Recommends for Classic V8 Owners: Do not install a brand-new MAF sensor without replacing your engine air filter! The most common cause of premature MAF failure is a dirty, clogged, or deteriorating air filter that allows debris to sandblast the delicate hot-film element.
Tech Tip: The sensitive measuring element inside the sensor is exposed. Never touch the internal wire/film with your fingers, as the natural oils from your skin will bake onto the element and destroy it the moment the engine is started. Ensure the entire airbox housing and intake boots are wiped completely clean before installing the new sensor.
Essential Tools & Hardware for the Job
Replacing the MAF sensor on your classic V8 is a very accessible DIY, but it requires extreme cleanliness and the right tools to easily navigate the large intake boots and clamps. We highly recommend adding these items to your ECS Tuning cart before starting the repair:
Mann-Filter or Genuine Mercedes-Benz Engine Air Filter: (CRITICAL) You must replace your engine air filter simultaneously to ensure clean, unrestricted airflow to your brand-new MAF sensor.
Schwaben Flexible Hose Clamp Driver (ECS Part #: ES#2975694): The MAF sensor on these engines is secured by large worm-gear hose clamps that can be incredibly frustrating to reach with a standard screwdriver. This flexible driver easily bends around the intake components to loosen and tighten clamps without stripping them.
CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner (ECS Part #: ES#3035760): While your new sensor is perfectly clean, this is a great chemical to keep on the shelf for future 20,000-mile maintenance intervals to safely strip away oil and dust without damaging the sensitive plastics.
